REGGIO EMILIA APENNINES: OUTDOOR TRAINING GROUND

The Reggio Emilia Apennines are an outdoor training ground on the ridge that runs between Tuscany and Emilia, along the Euro-Mediterranean climatic border, among passes higher than one thousand metres and peaks that reach two thousand metres of height. A horse trail also suitable for mountain biking crosses the upper Reggio Emilia Apennines from east to west and joins regional trails and horse trails. The Sentiero Matilde, from Ciano d'Enza to the border of the province of Modena on the Dolo River, the Sentiero dei Ducati, along the Enza valley, and the Sentiero Spallanzani, from Scandiano to Tuscany are the main north-south routes from the lower hills to the mountain ridge.

The historical communication routes, the interesting landscape and environment, and the morphology of this territory make  the ridge of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines a particularly suitable area for horses as means of transport and tourism.. The Park is crossed by the Grande Ippovia dell'Appennino Emilia Romagna (great horse trail of the Emilia Romagna Apennines), a large network of trails that cover over 1000 kilometres from the Province of Rimini to the Province of Piacenza, equipped with rest points for horses and riders. The network is a great point of reference for those wishing to cross the Parco Nazionale on horseback and is an important link with the Tuscan side of the park. Horse trails are also suitable for hiking and mountain biking.
